Finding Your Why

When we do what we love, that’s a passion. When our passion serves others, that’s a purpose. Finding our why, or knowing our why brings purpose to what we do. And many times, we don’t FIND our purpose, but rather our purpose FINDS us. When we fully know ourselves, and our head and heart are in alignment, is when our ‘why’ becomes more clear.
I believe in signs. Signs are everywhere. And if you’re open to seeing signs, you WILL see them. A few weeks ago my Dad and I were having a coffee. He is also starting a new venture. Over the 90 minutes we met, we probably spent over half of it talking about ‘our why’, and our purpose for what we do. Later that evening I was driving along the River Road in St. Paul and noticed the car in front of me had vanity license plates. I’m always amused by what people choose to put on their car. It’s part of their identity and sometimes their beliefs. It gives you a glimpse of who someone is without ever seeing their face. As I approached the car, I noticed it had an out of state license plate from Nebraska. I could make out the letters on the plate, but it took me reading it a few times to understand the meaning. KNOWUR Y. I got chills. I quickly took out my phone and snapped a picture (oops), and sent it to my Dad (oops). Why did I see that car, at that time, on that day?…the same day my Dad and I shared a coffee and spoke about this very topic. It wasn’t a coincidence. This was meant to be seen.
Jay Shetty, a best-selling author spoke on dharma - He says dharma represents a person’s calling. He explains that dharma is using your natural inclinations – what you thrive at – to serve others. “You should feel passion when the process is pleasing and your execution is skillful”.
As we continue to work on ourselves, there may be times when our mind thinks one thing, but our heart feels another. Eventually alignment WILL take place. Things will then feel like they are falling into place more naturally than ever before. Although it may feel counterintuitive, it is nevertheless true. We want to know our why, but it’s important to remember, that before we ever try to improve ourselves, we must first know ourselves.
